Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

From NPR's Weekend America website: a lost tape of a sermon at Temple Israel in Hollywood, 1965. His words and ideas are still as sharp and direct and necessary, then as now. Click here to listen.

A Chesterton for every day...

"Nativity" - Hari Santosa, Indonesia

JANUARY 6th
THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY

THE WISE MEN

STEP softly, under snow or rain,
To find the place where men can pray;
The way is all so very plain,
That we may lose the way.

Oh, we have learnt to peer and pore
On tortured puzzles from our youth.
We know all labyrinthine lore,
We are the three Wise Men of yore,
And we know all things but the truth.

Go humbly . . . it has hailed and snowed . . .
With voices low and lanterns lit,
So very simple is the road,
That we may stray from it.

The world grows terrible and white,
And blinding white the breaking day,
We walk bewildered in the light,
For something is too large for sight,
And something much too plain to say.

The Child that was ere worlds begun
( . . . We need but walk a little way . . .
We need but see a latch undone . . . )
The Child that played with moon and sun
Is playing with a little hay.

The house from which the heavens are fed,
The old strange house that is our own,
Where tricks of words are never said,
And Mercy is as plain as bread,
And Honour is as hard as stone,

Go humbly; humble are the skies,
And low and large and fierce the Star,
So very near the Manger lies,
That we may travel far.

Hark ! Laughter like a lion wakes
To roar to the resounding plain,
And the whole heaven shouts and shakes,
For God Himself is born again
And we are little children walking
Through the snow and rain.

G.K. Chesterton - 'Daily News.' -

From Chesterton, Day by Day, a website featuring "Selections from the Writings in Prose and Verse of G. K. Chesterton, with an Extract for every Day of the Year and for each of the Moveable Feasts."

Now to be reading Chesterton...

A special thanks to Katherine Lo, who presented on G.K. Chesterton, at the Gathering. For more information on reading Chesterton, Katherine recommends the following:

"Chesterton authorities suggest starting with his Autobiography and then moving on to Orthodoxy (this is to some degree a companion piece to Heretics, which was written first and debates the major philosophies/ideologies of his period--some might enjoy reading them both). The book that influenced C.S. Lewis so much is The Everlasting Man, and for those who enjoy murder mysteries, the Father Brown series is a lot of fun and contains great nuggets of Chesterton's orthodoxy." the Latest! 12/31-1/7

Hope you all had a blessed holiday season and a great New Years. A special thank-you to those who participated in this year's Gathering re-Gift X-change. We busted the collective gut with laughter. Pictures to follow. You will not believe your eyes!

Mega-props to the Cold War Kids, who played on the 12/21 episode of the Letterman show. I was hoping to post a clip from You-Tube, but NBC says no! Anyone have a copy you want to share with the Gathering? Cold War Kids are bi-coastal through the month of January. Catch them if you can...

We enjoyed Dave Korapi's presentation on Jonathan Edwards on 12/31. As we think about the coming year, take a glance at Edwards' personal Resolutions, and be inspired.

Also this week, bid on amazing handmade arts and crafts in a live ebay auction to raise money for the family of James Kim. Check out this link to view items for sale. Kim sacrificed his life to save his wife and two daughters, when they were stranded in the mountains of Oregon during a snowstorm, over this past Thanksgiving.
